Hike, Play, and Breathe in Hewitt

Trails above Greenwood Lake, a fully fenced playground, and open skies just off Warwick Turnpike.

About Us

When the mountain laurel blooms along the ridge trails at San Cap Recreation Area, the hillsides above Greenwood Lake turn pink and white in a way that stops hikers mid-step. That seasonal spectacle alone draws regulars back every June, but the park earns its 4.3-star rating year-round through a combination of accessible trails, lake views, and a thoughtfully designed play area that families in Hewitt, NJ have come to rely on.

The playground is built with two distinct zones: a structure scaled for kids aged 2 to 5 and a larger one for ages 5 to 12, surrounded by interactive activity panels along the perimeter fence. The enclosure is fully gated, benches are inside with parents in mind, and the whole setup sits just steps from the trailheads. It is the kind of park where a grandparent can watch a toddler on the swings while an older sibling disappears up a wooded path and comes back muddy and grinning.

The Warwick Turnpike location puts San Cap within easy reach of Ringwood, West Milford, and the lake communities along the New York border. Parking is straightforward, the trails are clearly marked, and the views from the upper ridge reward even a short 20-minute climb.

What We Offer

Hiking trails wind through second-growth forest and open onto elevated views of Greenwood Lake, one of the more scenic stretches of water straddling the New Jersey and New York border. Trail surfaces range from packed gravel near the entrance to rooted woodland paths higher up, making the area suitable for casual walkers and more confident hikers alike.

The fenced playground includes age-separated equipment for toddlers and school-age children, interactive sensory panels mounted along the fence line, and seating inside the enclosure for caregivers. The dual-zone design keeps younger children from getting overwhelmed by bigger kids, a small but meaningful detail that parents notice immediately.

Beyond the playground and trails, the open recreation space accommodates picnicking, nature observation, and informal outdoor activity. The park is managed by the county and remains free to access, making it one of the more practical outdoor destinations in the Passaic County highlands for families who want fresh air without a long drive or an admission fee.

"The playground has two sets (one for 2-5 yrs and 5-12yrs) and several little interactive sections along edges. Fully fenced in with benches and a trash can inside. There aren't swings, but there was plenty for us to explore. There is a sunshelter right next playground which would be nice to take a break and have a snack in the heat, however there is no picnic table or chairs so you would need a blanket or something to sit on if desired. There are two porta potties at the entrance (didn't use but they were being cleaned when we left the park). There is also a nice paved walkway around the whole area. We really enjoyed the park today and look forward to visiting again."

"This place is getting real sad for children, especially my son who loves to ride his bike but he can’t because everyone always is letting their dogs off the leash and he doesn’t feel safe because at any given moment they could attack my son which in my opinion if that ever happens they will pay the consequences from his Dad!!!there is no respect at all at this park whatsoever!!"

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is San Cap Recreation Area located?

The park is at 22 Warwick Turnpike, Hewitt, NJ 07421. Hewitt is a section of West Milford Township in Passaic County, close to the New York state border and Greenwood Lake.

Is there a fee to enter the park?

No. San Cap Recreation Area is a county-managed public park and is free to access. There is no admission charge for the trails or the playground.

What are the hiking trails like?

The trails range from relatively flat wooded paths near the entrance to steeper, rooted terrain on the upper ridge. The reward at the top is an open view of Greenwood Lake. The trails are best in spring when mountain laurel blooms along the route.

Is the playground suitable for toddlers?

Yes. The playground has two separate equipment zones: one designed for children ages 2 to 5 and a second for ages 5 to 12. The entire area is fully fenced and gated, with benches inside the enclosure for caregivers.

Are dogs allowed in the park?

Can kids ride bikes at San Cap?

There is open space suitable for cycling, though the terrain is varied. Some visitors have noted that off-leash dogs in the area can make biking less comfortable for younger riders. Calling ahead or visiting during quieter weekday hours may help.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The park is accessible year-round, but late May through early June is particularly popular when mountain laurel blooms along the hiking trails. Fall foliage in October also makes the ridge views especially striking.
